NinetyOne - Interview

NinetyOne is made up of London based DJs and producers Kwame and Martin and have been taking over the scene by storm. The duo have played alongside some greats such as Amine Edge & Dance, WADE, Simone Liberali and for Steve Lawler's Viva Warriors for New Years. The boys seem to be unstoppable at the moment! See what they had to say when Floor'd had a little chat with the duo.

What made you get into DJ’ing and producing?

Well we started off raving to the likes of MK and Amine edge and Dance and we always used to say to each other how amazing would it be to be that guy that’s creating all of this or play on the big stage at a festival, to cut the long story short we both ended up getting decks and we would play at pre drinks etc until one day a good friend of ours who had a show on reprezent radio invited us down to play a mini mix before the guest of the show arrived which was Andrew Kay. So we decided to stay for his interview and listen in and approached him afterwards and he said to us “look guys if you want to do this properly here’s my number let’s sort something out” and before you knew it we were playing our first few gigs in some of London’s best clubs.

How did you two decide to DJ together and does it come with any challenges?

We both got into electronic music at the same time we were big magnetic man fans and that lead us into the house scene so it was only right we embarked on the journey together. It comes with many challenges, one being able to fit music into both of our schedules at the same time that can be very difficult at times.

What are your top tips for beginner DJs?

Be true to yourself, in a sense that don’t do what you think people want you to do because you will not enjoy it! I think a lot of people play a certain type of sound because they think that’s what people want to hear.

Networking is key go out and meet other DJs and promoters, nothing comes easy you have to go out and get it.

What’s your opinion of people on their phones and taking videos in clubs?

We understand why people do it because we’ve been on the other side and quite often ravers will only see there favourite DJ maybe twice a year so they want to look back on their memories however, we have been to clubs where everyone is just enjoying the moment no phones and that’s nice to see too. One of our fondest memories is playing at Studio 338 Garden party just as the sun set, we played one of our final tracks looked up and saw a couple hundred phone lights and it was an amazing thing to see it was like a concert!

What is your biggest achievement in your careers so far?

Being booked for hideout festival in Croatia and playing on the Studio 338 Terrace has to be up there.

Who are your biggest influences or inspirations?

We have such a wide variety of DJs and producers that we listen to for example, we really like Hot since 82 but then also enjoy Gorgon city, at the same time we could listen to Joey Daniel or East end dubs all day.

What song always makes it into your sets no matter what and why?

We mix our sets up quite often however Ren Phillips and Made you look have a edit of it just won’t do and it’s fantastic! Perfect to get any crowd going.

What is your dream gig or label to be signed to?

I think a dream would be to play at an event like BPM or Ants at Ushuaia.

What’s next for NinetyOne?

Focusing on getting our own music out there is the next step for us we have a few productions we been working on so hopefully you’ll be hearing our music real soon.
